While Tenniel established the enduring visual identity for Alice and her companions, Newell reinvented Wonderland by exploiting advances in technology. Indeed, Newell’s original drawings for Alice are among the most endearing works in the Harvard Art Museums collections. The books’ indelible illustrations by John Tenniel (1820–1914) and subsequent attempts by his younger American counterpart, Peter Newell (1862–1924), are no less powerful. These figures of speech from Lewis Carroll’s beloved books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (1872) still resonate today, especially as we navigate unsettling times. Recently it seems that we’ve been swept down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass into a strangely upside down and backward world. He’s eating all the shrimp!” “What if he eats it all up and then comes after us?” And he caused all the fish to become suspicious and afraid of the whale. He stared at them for hours admiring their shimmering scales and eating shrimp.īefore long some of the fish noticed the whale staring at them, and one of them who was in a particularly bad mood said to the others, “Why is that old whale staring at us” Who knows what he’s thinking!” “Look at that giant mouth. It was a wonderful life! One day a gentle old whale decided to join the fish friends. In the 2 nd book, Rainbow Fish and his friends were very happy and had lots of tiny delicious shrimp to eat and lots of friends to play with. Remember the Rainbow Fish who taught us about sharing by giving his shiny scales to his fish friends. Other figures, like Martin Luther King Jr., were pushed forward by the accomplishments of the African-American women working at NASA. The women at NASA, Shetterly explained, are often overlooked in history. “Their goal was, of course, not to stand out because of their differences, but fit in because of their talent.” “Their next step was to convince their colleagues to look beyond, to look beyond their race, to look beyond their gender,” Shetterly said. The book was adapted to be a movie and has since been nominated for three Oscars.įollowing an introduction by University President Mark Schlissel, Shetterly began by explaining the plot of the story, highlighting how the characters in the story pushed themselves to excel at school and were agents of much larger social change. The women, whose stories were covered up in history, helped put Apollo 11 on the moon through their work. “Hidden Figures” is the story of African-American female mathematicians at NASA in the years before and during the space race. After the initial slam, Rob Sibarium could feel every one of those square feet tilting as the tower bent south, so far that it seemed as if it would never recoil. On the southwest end of the 89th floor, the insurance company MetLife had 10,000 square feet of space. A bomb, they decided, several breaths later. Before Pilipiak could get the words "Good morning" out of his mouth, he felt something smack the back of his head, and he was hurled into a wall. Akane Ito heard him coming and looked up from her desk to greet him. In another part of the floor, Walter Pilipiak had just pushed open the door to the offices of Cosmos International, an insurance brokerage where he was president. The door swung free, even though she had bolted it shut. At 8:46:30, an impact had knocked her off a chair in the law office on the 89th floor of the north tower, 1 World Trade Center. A bomb, Dianne DeFontes thought, when thinking became possible again. And Sophie Neville has had to deal with those who identify her only as Titty the little girl who played The Able Seaman as she sailed across Coniston, imagining she was an intrepid adventurer seeking out new lands.Īs a last intriguing note, Sophie considers how the quality of their acting may have been better if the film had been shot out of story sequence, as of course many films are. She probably spent the rest of her life trying to life up to everyone's dream image of her as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. The case of Judy Garland is very well known. I have occasionally wondered about how the reality of having once being a child star affects one's life. But what Sophie writes of the aftermath is equally if not even more worthy of note. The description of the process of film-making is captivating in itself. Sophie Neville played Arthur Ransome's child hero Titty in the 1973 film "Swallows and Amazons" and she recounts every day of the shoot, with the aid of many photos taken at the time, and her own childhood diary. A fascinating book for all those interested in film history, film-making and how it feels to be a child star. First, he must rid his castle of all evidence of the lengths he went to find her. It has become one of the New York Times bestsellers. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed (2019) is a nonfiction book by American writer and psychotherapist, Lori Gottlieb. 1-Page Summary of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone Overall Summary Not ideal and a little distracting at first, but in fact, as I kept reading, I realised that the movie was a “true” adaptation, and I relaxed into the story. So, when I set off reading “Story of your life”, I had the movie freshly in my head. This didn’t happen – obviously – with Arrival, mainly because I hadn’t realised it was an adaptation. I don’t hold fast to this rule, particularly if it’s something I probably wouldn’t have read anyhow, like, say, Girl on a train, but if I have an interest in it, reading-before-seeing is my preference. What a fascinating story it is …īut here’s the thing … I usually prefer to read a book or story before I see its adaptation. Having enjoyed the film, but having questions about its meaning, of course I had to read it. The story, Ted Chiang’s “Story of your life”, won the Nebula Award in 2000. She had also provided a link to the long short story from which the film was adapted. Consequently, when we saw the intriguing, mind-bending sci-fi film Arrival, recently, I had to see whether she’d reviewed it, and she had. As with books, I don’t read reviews before I see films, so I can never remember whether I’ve seen a review post pass through my inbox. Whenever I see a film, I go to Arti’s Ripple Effects blog to see whether she’s reviewed it. Illustration for “Story of your Life”, by Hidenori Watanave for Hayakawa’s S-F Magazine.
